Hackney Carriages (taxis) operate from taxi ranks and can be hailed in the street.

They carry a full width roof sign that can be illuminated at night and clearly states 'TAXI'. For the London style taxis and some of the other wheelchair accessible taxis, the illuminated sign is incorporated into the roof of the vehicle, directly above the front of the windscreen.

A hackney carriage can also choose to attach to a private hire operator if desired.

Fares

Fares are set by the Council and a copy of these must be displayed within the vehicle.

Vehicles must have a taximeter fitted which clearly displays the maximum fare a passenger can be charged.
