Ipswich Borough Council consults on its Air Quality Management Areas

Published17th February 2021

Ipswich Borough Council is carrying out a review of the boundaries of three of our Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs), we are inviting residents and businesses to give us their views on the proposed changes.

The AQMAs measure levels of the air pollutant, Nitrogen Dioxide. In order to cut levels of pollution, the Council has an Air Quality Action Plan (AQAP) this includes a wide range of measures that aim to reduce levels of pollution.

We wish to abolish AQMA Order No. 4 and reduce in size AQMA Order No.1  due to lower levels of air pollution. We also wish to change the boundary of AQMA Order No. 3  to enable us to gain a better knowledge  of air pollution in that area.

The proposed changes:

  • AQMA Order No.1 – Norwich Road, Chevallier Street and Valley Road junction: the AQMA to be amended to remove a section of Chevallier Street. The AQMA is proposed to cover areas of air-pollution exceedance on Chevallier Street and a small area around the Norwich Road double roundabout.
  • AQMA Order No. 3 – Star Lane/Key Street/ College Street gyratory system: the AQMA to be amended to include an additional length of Fore Street.
  • AQMA Order No. 4 – Bramford Road / Yarmouth Road / Chevallier Street junction and part of Chevallier Street; the AQMA to be cancelled

Cllr Alasdair Ross, Community Protection Portfolio Holder for Ipswich Borough Council, says:

It is pleasing to be able to report that the level of air pollution in a number of our Air Quality Management Areas has been reduced, however we are fully aware that there is still more to be done."

“These proposed changes to our Air Quality Management Areas will help us gain more information on the levels of air pollution and put us in a better position to use our Air Quality Action Plan to reduce pollution further .”

The consultation is available at https://www.ipswich.gov.uk/content/consultation-proposed-changes-aqma-within-ipswich Responses need to be made by 24 March 2021.
