More jobs on the way for former Sproughton sugar beet site

Published3rd March 2021

The successful economic development of Ipswich’s Eastern Gateway on the former sugar beet site at Sproughton continues with a recommendation to Ipswich Borough Council’s Executive on 9 March that it enters into negotiations to secure the occupation of three more plots.

The Eastern Gateway site was bought by the council in 2014 and has seen major redevelopment with the demolition of the iconic silos and construction of site roads and infrastructure. The council has already secured the occupation of two substantial plots to LDH (La Doria) and Amazon who, between them, are employing around 500 people.

The new potential uses involve the development of industrial / storage units, the provision of EV charging infrastructure and an existing Ipswich business consolidating its operations at Eastern Gateway. Between them they expected to see a further 450 jobs operating from the business park.

If negotiations with these businesses are successful then around 70% of Eastern Gateway will be occupied.

Says Cllr David Ellesmere, Leader of Ipswich Borough Council:

“The arrival of both LDH and Amazon has already led to 500 staff being employed on Eastern Gateway and another 450 jobs will be created with these new occupiers. This underlines what a sound investment Eastern Gateway has been for Ipswich Borough Council. With unemployment increasing across the country as a result of Covid I’m proud that our foresight in buying the sugar beet site has paid off and we are now able to help bring hundreds of new jobs to Ipswich.”
