An undisclosed share of the £6.5bn funds, earmarked for the now derailed HS2 project, will go towards Suffolk’s Ely and Haughley rail junction upgrade.

Suffolk Public Sector Leaders (SPSL) group is thrilled to see upgrade plans for the Ely and Haughley Junction finally come to fruition.

After investing £1 million in 2021, as part of a £6.2 million commitment to Suffolk’s recovery after COVID-19, the SPSL group are excited to see this additional funding to support the completion of the rail upgrade.

The Ely and Haughley Junction upgrade represents a significant investment in the future of rail travel in Suffolk, enhancing connectivity, efficiency, and safety for both passenger and freight services.

This investment in the region's rail infrastructure will unlock numerous benefits, both regionally and nationally.

Councillor Neil MacDonald, Chair, Suffolk Public Sector Leaders, says:

“As the Ely and Haughley Junction upgrade enters this next phase, we mark a significant milestone in the future of rail transport in Suffolk.

The SPSL realised the importance of these junction upgrades when it committed £1 million as part of the 2021 COVID-19 recovery strategy.  The upgrades will be better for passengers, take lorries off the roads and help the economic growth of Suffolk.”
