Finding housing solutions for vulnerable people

Published16th July 2024

Ipswich Borough Council’s Executive is set to commit to supporting single person households and rough sleepers who need supported temporary accommodation.

It is proposed that the council procures temporary accommodation for those who need support in order to live independently or to get off the streets.

Following the decision by Suffolk County Council to reduce its commitment to housing related support, Ipswich Borough Council is taking the opportunity to procure support services and accommodation together to ensure that vulnerable people receive the support they need.

This reinforces the Council’s long-term approach to tackling homelessness, including rough sleeping. In the last three years, the Council has supported 176 rough sleepers into accommodation, and prevented homelessness for 2,271 households.

Councillor Alasdair Ross, Ipswich Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Housing, says:

“Ipswich Borough Council is committed to supporting people to live independent, healthy, and fulfilled lives. This includes ensuring support is available to anyone who might be at risk of being homeless and, crucially, that individuals can be supported for a variety of issues.

“Whether we decide to work independently or along with our district councils, we hope by developing a new temporary housing model we can better manage demand and help meet the housing needs of some of the most vulnerable people in our communities.”
