Three Ipswich parks retain coveted Green Flag Awards

Published16th July 2024

Three parks in Ipswich have again been recognised with prestigious Green Flag Awards, the international quality mark for parks and green spaces.

Today, Ipswich Borough Council is celebrating after receiving a trio of awards for Bourne, Christchurch and Holywells parks.

The news of this year’s accolades for the parks is testament to the hard work and dedication of the team that care for the green spaces of Ipswich, so that visitors and residents alike can enjoy them. This is now the fourth year running that Bourne Park has been given Green Flag status, which has been held by Christchurch Park for 17 years in succession and Holywells Park for 14 years in a row.

Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award Scheme Manager, Paul Todd MBE, said:

“I would like to congratulate everyone involved at Ipswich Borough Council on achieving these Green Flag Awards.

“The parks are vital green spaces for communities in Ipswich to socialise, enjoy nature, for children to play safely, and they provide important opportunities for park users to improve their physical and mental health.

"We know that staff and volunteers work tirelessly to ensure that the parks maintain the high standards of the Green Flag Award, so everyone involved should feel extremely proud of their achievement.

"It is important that our free to use spaces are maintained to the Green Flag Award standard, making them accessible for all members of the community while ensuring the environment is protected.”

Councillor Lucy Trenchard, Ipswich Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Parks and Climate Change, says:

“We are delighted that Bourne, Christchurch and Holywells parks have retained their Green Flag status. We are incredibly proud of all our parks, and we’d like to thank our hard-working Parks team, community groups and volunteers who make them such special places to visit.

"Ipswich has so many fantastic parks and open spaces bringing huge benefits to our residents, visitors and wildlife.”

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.
