New recycling bins for Ipswich town centre

Published27th October 2023

Ipswich Borough Council has installed eight bins in Ipswich Town Centre dedicated to Plastic Bottle and Aluminium can recycling, thanks to #InTheLoop grant funding.

The new style bins, installed in Autumn 2023, are part of an on-street initiative for recycling on-the-go, with eye catching designs to encourage residents and visitors to recycle plastic bottles and cans in its own section of the dual bin - with the other section for all other waste.

These eight new special bins can be found in Tavern Street, Westgate Street and Carr Street. To keep contamination to a minimum, all other waste including coffee cups and crisp packets should be placed in the general waste section of these bins as plastic and can recycling are the focus!

The funding for these bins is part of a national campaign by environmental charity Hubbub and McDonald’s. The #InTheLoop grant fund was launched in early 2023 to help local authorities and other organisations boost on-the-go recycling for items that are disposed of most in high streets.

First trialled in Leeds in 2018, #InTheLoop is the “UK’s biggest collaborative approach” to boost recycling on the go. Across all #InTheLoop pilot projects so far, Hubbub says over 500 bins have been rolled out and over 2.5 million bottles have so far been collected and recycled.

Hubbub is an award-winning creative charity that inspires action that’s good for the environment and for everyone. They won the Charity of the Year Award in 2020 and Best Social Media Presence in 2021.

Since 2014, Hubbub has delivered more than 154 trailblazing environmental campaigns in collaboration with over 2,500 partners, helping to shift the national debate on key environmental issues.
